Using Squarespace in South Africa with PayFast, Netcash or Rave

If you’ve built a beautiful Squarespace website and you want to take payments using PayFast, Netcash, or Rave, you’ll be disappointed to learn that these aren’t supported.

Why doesn’t Squarespace support payments in South African Rand (ZAR)?

Online payments can be a problem if you’re trying to use Squarespace for commerce in South Africa. Squarespace only supports three payment processors for online sales

  • PayPal

  • Stripe

  • Squarespace Payments (a whitelabel version of Stripe, managed by Squarespace)

None of these are South Africa friendly yet because:

  • PayPal doesn't support South African Rand (ZAR) so cannot take payments in your own currency

  • Stripe allows payments in Rand but they do not allow businesses that are entirely based in South Africa to open a Stripe account!

Is there a workaround?

The only workaround is to use a buy button from an alternative ecommerce provider, such as Shopify (affiliate link). They have β€˜buy buttons’ that you can embed in Squarespace and they support PayFast. The Shopify basic plan is currently $29 USD per month. We wrote a guide on how to add Shopify Buy Buttons to Squarespace.
