Can I use a different payment processor with Squarespace?

Third Party Payment Method using Squarespace Commerce

Squarespace support two of the largest and most reliable payment providers in the industry - Stripe and PayPal. If you are based in one of their main territories, they work really, really well. They even support Apple Pay and Venmo.

Unfortunately, it takes some time for Squarespace to add new territories and features (you can only imagine the legal, logistics and technical issues involved in doing this) and so Squarespace users in many countries want to integrate other payment methods into Squarespace. So can it be done? Well, it depends.

Payment Integration with Squarespace eCommerce features

You cannot integrate another payment processor with Squarespace’s own eCommerce features. It’s simply not possible. If you want to use the commerce features that are built into Squarespace you must use the payment processors that Squarespace provides (the recommended route).

To get technical for a moment, this is because to integrate a third party payment processor you need access to backend code (using NodeJS, PHP, Java or something similar). On Squarespace - even in Developer Mode, we only have access to the frontend code (JavaScript and JSON) and these cannot integrate third-party payments with the Squarespace commerce features.

So to be clear, you cannot integrate any third party services like iDEAL, Mollie or Square, and you cannot add methods of payment that Stripe supports, if Squarespace haven’t added support for them.

Checkout Integration with Squarespace

The only way to add other payment methods to your Squarespace site is to ignore the commerce features in Squarespace and integrate an entirely different commerce package. To be clear, this is not a new payment provider, it’s an entirely new checkout and product management system that you’ll also need to pay a subscription for.

Popular options that you can integrate with Squarespace include Shopify Buy Buttons (on their basic plan) and SendOwl - we highly recommend both. Use our special links below to get a free 14-day trial account and try it out with Squarespace:

SendOwl

Please note you will need to take a subscription with Shopify to use many of these payment methods in addition to your Squarespace subscription. The Lite plan starts at US$9 per month.
