Block Editor UI Changes [3 February 2021]

Today, the CMS Product Teams made another series of changes to the Squarespace UI. Some screenshots of the old and new UI can be found below.

These changes were made without prior notice and crucially they break a number of essential editing features on Gallery Blocks, Map Blocks, Summary Blocks and Video Blocks:

  • Cannot add a Vimeo video to a Video Block using a URL if a Vimeo Basic account is being used. The workaround is to use Embed Data. [Fixed by 14 February]

  • Cannot adjust the height of a Map Block. The drag handle no longer exists. There was no known workaround. [Fixed by 18:00 on 08 February]

  • Cannot add blocks to a NEW blog post on Squarespace 7.0 because the new UI does not close in the popup editor that is used for new Blog Posts. The workaround is to create a new blog post, add a few characters to the Text Block and then save it as a draft. The draft post can then be reopened using the full screen editor and edited as normal. [Fixed]

  • Cannot add blocks to an Event because the new UI does not close. [Fixed by 14 February]

  • Cannot add blocks to the Additional Info section of a Product because the new UI does not close. Affects the old and new styles of product editor on 7.0 and 7.1. [Fixed by 14 February]

  • Cannot access some Summary Block settings, for example cannot set image widths in List mode. [Fixed by 14 February]

  • Cannot add multiple categories or tags to a Summary Block filter. Previously you could add multiple categories or tags separated by commas on anything other than Squarespace 7.1 Store content. April 2021: Squarespace have now restored the option to have multiple tags, but no longer support multiple categories.
