Why do I need Currencies?

Showing clear and understandable prices should be an important part of your site’s design. Buyers expect to see prices in a currency they recognise. It helps build trust and reduces hesitation. Recent surveys suggest that 85% to 95% of visitors leave a site without making a purchase when prices are not shown in their local currency.

Currencies for Squarespace allows you to display product prices in your visitors’ local currency, either automatically based on their location or via a manual currency selector in your site’s header. Prices can be shown in just the user’s local currency or, for added clarity, you can choose to show both their local currency and your store’s checkout currency. This helps set expectations before checkout because Squarespace doesn’t support multiple currencies at checkout. Customers are still charged in your store’s native currency with their card issuer converting the transaction automatically into their local currency.

Currencies for Squarespace allows potential customers to see your prices in their own currency. This can happen automatically or they can select a preferred currency from a currency selector in your site’s header. Although Squarespace doesn’t allow multiple currencies at the checkout, your customer’s card issuer will automatically convert the transaction into the customer’s local currency. Currencies shows all your product page prices in both your checkout currency and the visitor’s local currency to avoid concerns when they reach the checkout.

A trusted solution

When clients first asked us to build Squarespace stores with local currency pricing back in 2017, the only option was extensive custom development, at a cost of $2,000+ per site. In response, we built the original Currency plugin in 2018 to make international pricing accessible to more business owners who were using Squarespace.

The plugin is now used daily on hundreds of Squarespace websites and remains one of the most established currency solutions available for the platform.

Building on the success of the original plugin for Squarespace 7.0, we released a completely re-engineered version for Squarespace 7.1 in 2022. It retains the features customers rely on, while delivering improved performance and additional features.

All of our products are designed and built by us exclusively for Squarespace, with ongoing priority support available with our subscription product, for businesses who rely on their websites.

Compare our plugin to other products

  • Does the other currency converter show the currency symbol in the correct position?

  • Does the other currency converter slow down your site? Many currency converters use jQuery (a javascript library) or retrieve currency rates every time a new product is viewed, slowing down your Squarespace website. Our product does not use jQuery and it caches the exchange rates for each visitor so your site’s performance is not affected.

  • Is the other currency converter easy to install? We take care of installation for you. It is included in the price.

  • Does the other currency converter show customer-friendly, rounded prices, or does it show weird values like $21.73? Our solution has different rounding modes.

  • Can the other currency converter round prices up by a small percentage to allow for conversion charges charged by a customer’s card provider?

  • Can the other currency converter show prices in the customer’s currency and the checkout currency (an optional feature to avoid confusion when they reach the checkout)?

  • Does the other currency converter explain that a different currency will be used at checkout? (It isn’t possible for anyone to change the checkout currency on Squarespace.)

  • When products are β€˜on sale’, does the other currency converter show before and after pricing correctly? We doubt that it does.

  • Does the other currency converter show the correct prices when a visitor selects a differently priced variant?

  • Do they offer long term support? Will they be around in a year’s time when you need help? We offer a subscription version that includes automatic updates to protect your investment.

Specification and limitations

Our goal is to be completely honest and transparent, so we clearly list the full product specification and limitations of each product. This isn’t β€œsmall print” or β€œfine print”. This is important information that you should read carefully to ensure the product will meet your needs - before ordering. If you have any questions, we’re here to help.

  • All our plugins are digital products and, unlike physical products, cannot be returned. Orders cannot be canceled/refunded once supplied, unless the software can be proven to be faulty. Faulty digital products will be repaired or replaced. Full details can be found in section 2.3 of our Terms and Conditions.

  • This product is for English language websites only. Contact us if your site is in a another language.

  • This plugin shows product prices in the customer’s preferred currency and can also show the currency used by the site’s checkout page. The Squarespace Checkout cannot be modified, so this plugin has no impact on the payment currency used at checkout and cannot show alternative currencies on the Squarespace checkout page. This is a limitation imposed by the Squarespace platform and is the same for all plugins from all suppliers. No products can change the currency charged on your Squarespace checkout page.

  • This plugin converts the prices of standard products, subscription products and digital products, including Member Area Signup Blocks

  • This product is for Squarespace websites, not Acuity Scheduling.

  • Prices can be shown in both the user’s preferred currency and your checkout currency, or just the user’s preferred currency. You control this within the plugin settings.

  • This product rounds-up the decimal fraction to show more customer-friendly prices. It has three different rounding modes for the decimal fraction, and can also hide the β€œ.00” element if required. For example, it can round up $29.73 to $29.99, $30.00 or $30. It does not yet round-up the non-fractional element, which means that $197.00 cannot be rounded to $199.00.

  • The product correctly converts the β€œbefore” and β€œafter” prices for sale items, showing them both. Other plugins do not do this.

  • There are no additional installation fees. The basic cost includes professional installation by us, within seven business days.

  • We’re an established business. Our currency plugins have been installed on Squarespace sites since 2018.

  • We offer this plugin as either a subscription (recommended) or as a one-time purchase. The subscription includes all version upgrades and compatibility updates whenever Squarespace changes their platform, as well as priority email support. One-time purchases receive the software as-is at time of purchase, including bug fixes and patches for your purchased version. It doesn’t include version upgrades or compatibility updates if your version breaks due to Squarespace updates.

  • For each visitor to your site, this product attempts to determine the country they are in. It does this by using the regional settings on the visitor’s device. If their country can be identified (not all browsers and countries are supported yet) and their local currency is supported, their preferred currency will be set automatically. This method can be more accurate than geolocation and there are fewer privacy-related concerns. Visitors can also select their preferred currency manually and this preference is remembered for future visits. When an alternative currency has been selected, prices on product pages are shown in both the alternative currency and your checkout currency by default.

  • A β€˜geolocation’ feature (that attempts to determine the correct currency by checking the user’s IP address instead of using their device or browser settings) is available and can be enabled. This may require a subscription to a third-party geolocation service. We do not provide support for third party services so, if you choose to use geolocation, configuration and support of this feature will be the responsibility of the customer. You can read more about the geolocation option here: Geolocation for Currencies.

  • This product is compatible with all Squarespace websites built on original Squarespace version 7.1 templates. To check which version of Squarespace you are using, go to Website and look for the Design option. If the Design option does not appear, you are using the latest version of Squarespace and you can rest easy! If you do see the Design option, you're using an older version 7.0 template that is not compatible. You can check which template is being used by clicking Template within this Design menu. You can upgrade your website from version 7.0 to version 7.1 by using the free Squarespace Update Tool.

  • Your Squarespace website must be on at least a Core or Business billing plan. The plugin cannot be installed on a Basic or Personal website billing plan as these do not support plugins or code. If you're on a Personal or Basic plan, you can upgrade at any time. For more information on Squarespace Billing Plans, see Choosing the right Squarespace plan.

  • Users can select a preferred currency using the currency selector in the site’s header, beside the cart. The user’s preference is remembered for future visits.

  • This product will only function if the cart icon/link is included in the site header. This product does not support the β€˜floating’ cart icon.

  • The local currency is not shown in Quick View. We recommend that Quick View is disabled.

  • Buy Now, Pay Later plans like Klarna, Afterpay and Clearpay are not converted as these services do not apply to customers in other countries.

  • The product obtains the latest bank rates from the FloatRates service. Please note that we are not responsible for, or affiliated with, this third-party service. At the time of writing, FloatRates do not charge for the use of this service.

  • This product currently supports some of the most popular currencies, including (in alphabetical order by currency code): United Arab Emirates Dirham (AED), Argentine Peso (ARS), Australian Dollar (AUD), Brazilian Real (BRL), Canadian Dollar (CAD), Swiss Franc (CHF), Chilean Peso (CLP), Chinese Yuan (CNY), Danish Krone (DKK), Egyptian Pound (EGP), Euro (EUR), Pound Sterling (GBP), Hong Kong Dollar (HKD), Indonesian Rupiah (IDR), Israeli Shekel (ILS), Indian Rupee (INR), Japanese Yen (JPY), South Korean Won (KRW), Kuwaiti Dinar (KWD), Mexico Peso (MXN), Malaysian Ringgit (MYR), Norwegian Krone (NOK), New Zealand Dollars (NZD), Qatari Riyal (QAR), Romanian Leu (RON), Russian Ruble (RUB), Saudi Riyal (SAR), Swedish Krona (SEK), Singapore Dollar (SGD), Thailand Baht (THB), Taiwan New Dollar (TWD), US Dollar (USD) and South African Rand (ZAR). • When you purchase the product, you get a single copy of the software for use on the single website specified on the order form. To protect our rights, the product is not transferable and will stop working if the built-in Squarespace domain name or the primary domain name does not match the details supplied on the order form.

  • Squarespace make frequent changes to their Software and their Services. They do this regularly and without notifying their customers. Such changes are outside of our control and so we cannot guarantee that our products will be compatible with future changes. We mention this because we believe in honesty and transparency, although the same is true for all third-party add-ons, β€œplugins” and β€œcode snippets”. No-one can guarantee that their software will not be affected by Squarespace changes. For business critical applications, we recommend that you purchase the subscription version of this plugin to ensure it remains fully supported throughout its lifetime. Customers with a subscription receive automatic updates as well as priority email support. You can cancel the subscription at any time from your account panel, but doing so will cancel all our support obligations for the Software.

  • As specified in our Terms and Conditions, we cannot guarantee that the Software will be compatible with third party code, plugins, customisations or integrations installed on the Squarespace website. In particular, this product is not compatible with the Weglot Visual Editor.

  • Our products are compatible with all the current web browsers that support modern web standards, including Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Apple Safari and Microsoft Edge. Our products are not designed to be compatible with older browsers such as Internet Explorer, which Microsoft retired on 15 June 2022.

FAQs

How do I install the currency plugin?

We professionally install this plugin for you. The cost of installation is included in the price. When you purchase the plugin, a form will prompt you for all the information we need to enable us to install it for you. Once installed, we’ll test it (on desktop and mobile) and email you to confirm completion.

When will the plugin be installed?

We install this plugin within seven (7) business days. Before installing the plugin, we will carry out some pre-order checks to ensure your site is compatible. For example, your cart icon must appear in the header and you must have sufficient space available in the header for the currency selector (on both desktop and mobile). If we discover any issues, you’ll hear from us.

Why do you need Administrator access to my website?

This is the way Squarespace permissions work! To log in and work on a Squarespace site, each contributor needs to be assigned permissions on the site. Contributors can have different permissions assigned to them and this decides which settings they're allowed to see. Only contributors who have been assigned the Administrator role can access Code Injection, Custom CSS and Site Styles. It is essential that we have access to these to install and test the plugin. You’ll find more information on Squarespace permissions in their support article: Squarespace permissions explained.

Can I install the plugin myself?

No. We only offer this product with the installation service as we believe the complexity makes it unsuitable for installation by the end user and it would be impossible for us to provide support without Administrator access to the website.

Which templates are compatible with the plugin?

This product is compatible with all Squarespace 7.1 templates.

Will this product be made available for older version 7.0 templates?

We no longer offer a product for older Squarespace 7.0 sites; we recommend that you upgrade to the latest version for improved performance and newer features.

How are currency rates calculated?

There is nothing for you to calculate or update. Our plugin uses the latest daily currency rates, provided by a third party service. This service is currently free. We are not responsible for or affiliated with the the currency service.

Where can the Currency Selector appear?

The Currency Selector appears in the β€œHeader Actions” area of the Site Header. This is the part of the header that includes the Cart Icon, the Social Icons and the Account Login link. If you already have a number of elements in this area of the header, you may need to remove some, otherwise we will not be able to install the product.

The Currency Selector cannot be positioned elsewhere on the website.

Does the plugin support sale prices?

Yes. The plugin will display sale and original prices in both native and local currency. They will be formatted in the same way as your native prices, where the sale price is shown beside the original price.

Does the plugin support digital products?

No. At this time the plugin does not convert prices in the new β€œDigital” products such as courses. It is compatible with download products.

How are prices rounded?

The plugin can round local prices in one of three ways. You choose the rounding mode when you place your order with us. The three rounding modes are:

Zero: This is the most popular choice. All prices are shown rounded to the nearest integer, for example $599.00. There is also the option to remove the trailing β€œ.00” so the local price is displayed as $599.

Normal: prices are rounded to the nearest .29, .49, .79 and .99, for example $599.99 or $499.79.

Small: prices are rounded to the nearest .00, .09, .19, .29, .39, .49, .59 and .79. For example $599.19.

Note that because currencies are displayed in their native form, some currencies will be displayed in whole numbers without a decimal point or comma.

Can I use the plugin on multiple sites?

All our products are sold for use on a single website. If you wish to use this product on another website, you can purchase another copy.

Can I choose which currencies to display on my website?

When you place your order, we’ll ask you which currencies you’d like to display.

Can I hide the native currency, so visitors only see one price per product?

Yes. However, we do not recommend this. User Experience (UX) testing shows that customers are reassured by seeing the checkout currency throughout their purchase journey. If you hide the checkout currency, customers may be confused when they reach the checkout and find prices in a different currency to that displayed earlier in the process.
